Love - Nice And Convenient

“We were bound by fate… It was destiny that brought us together…” Haven’t you heard these familiar words more than too many times when indulging yourself into a Love/Romance anime?

Yes, it’s not a surprise that for some reason Japanese people have a strong belief when fate and love are concerned. More than enough of animes are infested with these corny lines which suggest that two persons are bound by something more than just a common interest towards cooking, or some other small detail in their lives. At times the actual magnitude of this concept just makes you laugh, since you can always see it coming a mile away. So, what might be the reason behind the fact that almost all people find this really compelling? The simple answer to that would be that every one would want love to be as convenient and easy as simply opening your front door as some girl/boy leaps into your arms while swearing eternal love and affection to you.

This might just be me, or why doesn’t this seem too logical in my eyes? If you’ve ever been in a relationship, you know that most of the time even attaining the actual partner is a struggle, and an achievement behind lots of sweat and affectionate words. But for some reason Japanese people find it to be quite realistic, and very believable. So, wonder how many people find the love of their life through this method? All I can say is that there are 1-2 pairs which are formed through similar factors, if even that many.

We all know how actually this is very powerful, and hence its popularity amongst anime is very self-evident. Every time you notice that a pair of people found each other through a red line that connects them and then they live happily ever after. Fairy tales always seem to leave us very content with love and its presence. This time instead of prince charming galloping to you with a white horse, you get little Sakura jumping on a yet unknown boy, who later proves to be her love, to whom she has basically dedicated her life to without even having met this person. In today’s world, this would lead into a restrain order with a possible stalking sue. As funny as it sounds, in real life it’s near impossible. Personally I prefer the idea these animes provide, yet denying its possibility of actually appearing in my life – a nice paradox.

There are dozens upon dozens of anime which go about the same thing, and for some reason the only thing that binds these is the fact that it’s always a girl who finds the boy. Why is this then? I don’t think chauvinism has the upper hand here though. The sheer fact here is that Japan and most of Oriental countries are dominated by males. If my mind serves me correct, the ratio of men and women in Japan is 95 women to 105 men, then just figure what that makes with the current population of approximately 128 million. In conclusion, men are relatively in a mess when getting a lady is concerned. So, no wonder that the majority of men would love to believe in the fact that the love of your life would basically swoop into your arms, while the actual fact being that even finding one in a bar is more difficult than expected. Of course, this is pure speculation, something my grey clump inside my head told me, you make up what you think.

But, in the end it all boils to the fact that people love convenience. We have such in almost all areas of life, some of them being more difficult to attain than others. We have “easy” money, vending machines for thirst and hunger (and a lot of other things in Japan, almost everything actually) and we have drive-through services for food etc. So, why can’t love be as convenient as going to the gas-station to pick up a bottle of coke, or as easy as opening your front door? It is utopian, fascinating and utterly great as an idea.

I’m still waiting – are you?
