Akira

31 years after the Third World War, in the year 2019, in the rubbles of the newly build Neo Tokyo, riots and power struggles are every day life. Amidst all of the chaos, underground gangs thrive and fight against each other. One of these gangs is lead by a boy Kaneda, who has a bigger part in the world than he realizes. As the chaos spreads around Neo Tokyo, Kaneda and his friends get mixed up in weird scientific theories, fights for power and subdued into the mix of human experiments of universal proportions. From here starts the fight for life, and possible the imminent destruction of Neo Tokyo…

The story revolves around Kaneda and his friends, who get mixed up in the weirdest pitches of society. Fighting for life and survival in the power struggles of the underground groups, riots in the cities and odd happenings within the nation. What comes in the story can often be very confusing, at times you found yourself wondering what just happened. Things come fast and complicated; sometimes you just can’t keep up. As the story involves everything from one person to the impact of societal decisions and weird experiments, it’s not for light entertainment. The cognitive impact of the story is massive. Hints of conspiracy theories, the human struggle of being blinded by ultimate power and thoughts on even huge things as the creation of the universe and human power and its limits take you deeper into the make-believe world of post-war chaos. What comes from ultimate destruction and the attempts to control society and the effects true power brings to a person, are brought up as well. The points given in the movie are very interesting, and should be thought about as much as possible during the movie. The story often has you confused, with information coming all the time and it often being very odd and suggestive. The starting point already takes you straight into the mix, and you’re left wanting some sort of intro into the movie, as you’re left a bit dazed in the beginning. The characters and the world itself can feel a bit distant because of this.

The characters are few, but all the more interesting. Kaneda, the cool and collected “hero” of the story is the center of attention. His thoughts and actions are reflected the most, as suspected. Other people are mostly side-lined, yet this seems to be a good choice, as then focus can be brought upon the people needed at the time. As you watch it, you still feel like you would’ve wanted to see more of the people, even Kaneda. The turmoil of what living amidst chaos brings is reflected in the emotions of the characters, yet it still has very little impact on you. Human despair, confusion and recklessness are the main themes within the people themselves. How the rebuilding from utter destruction to yet anew affect people is shown in a very realistic way, just as you’d think things would progress. Anarchy brewing within the underground and people trying to lead the country in the spiral of chaos.

The movie is a very violent one, and there’s no shortage of action. Amongst the riots on the street, there rages a war beneath the shallow surface of society, and all of its brutality and even grotesque happenings are brought up in vivid style, so this is certainly not meant for the younger viewers on the other side of the screen.

What the movie says about the human mind is interesting. Displaying images of despair, utmost power and its effects, just to add betrayal and redemption into the mix. This isn’t meant for all of you Saturday night Adam Sandler giggly movie types, so you best look for something else. The deep scoping of society, its structures and the universe in general is not the lightest entertainment. This makes the movie feel a bit slow at times, as you try to follow it and there are long periods where there isn’t any action at all. Some might find this boring, but I found it rather calming in the mix of all the violence.

Maybe this is a vision of what the world might be in a few decades, we’ll only have to wait and see. Overall Akira is one mixing bundle of action, wondering and confusion, molded into a very interesting package. Not the clearest movie, but at least something into the mix of the mainstream movies of today. I recommend that everyone takes a look at this, as it projects some interesting ideas and thoughts. If nothing else, people who love action and forms of super powers will get something out of this as well. In the end, the hype around this very legendary movie might’ve been a bit over the top, but at least it provided some quality entertainment in a different form than usual.

Remember, the future is still open, but we might have a choice what we do or don’t do…
