Furi Kuri - FLCL

Furi Kuri, or FLCL, is a short OVA story, which really doesn’t make any sense. The story is about a young boy named Naota. His brother has moved to the States to play baseball in the pro leagues. Naota doesn’t seem to know anything about his brother after he left, and his soul seems to be lost, wandering the plains in search for something which it lost a long time ago. Naota doesn’t really seem to show any feelings, only lives day by day with utmost depression. But his depression isn’t something of huge impact, only something which creates an aura around him. After Naota’s brother left, his brother’s girlfriend started to cling onto Naota for that special support she needs. She seems to be as lost as Naota is, and the only thing keeping her sane at the moment is cigarettes and Naota’s presence. One day they’re walking across a bridge, just like every day, when suddenly Naota’s is driven over by a moped. This moped is driven by a strange girl by the name of Haruko Haruhara. Naota doesn’t get killed by this accident, only gets a huge horn onto his forehead. And here everything starts.

FLCL is clearly an anime from one of the very far ends, it doesn’t make any sense. In the beginning the story goes with such speed that it’s really hard to keep up. It also keeps from telling that much information on the happenings, thus you hardly get anything which goes by your screen. In a way this is really annoying, but also creates a certain funny base for it. It really goes for comedy, and thus the speed and the freaky attitude is quite funny. At times you find yourself laughing with utmost joy, but most of the time you’re just sitting quiet trying to make something out of the anime. The pace and the over freaky characters make it so that you either love it, or hate it.

During the progress of FLCL it changes styles nearly all the time. It moves so much, that it almost makes your eyes pop out. This of course works to add to its already surging difference, and works as a way to give it a nice refreshing look.

The story itself also contains some romantic elements, but overall these really don’t play a huge role in the actual anime. It shows how friendships are formed, and how also opposites attract. But let’s be real here, the story isn’t a romance story, and even the slight romantic elements are fast driven into darkness by another confusing scene or comment… Clearly this is something you should REALLY consider before watching, and the only people I can recommend this are those whom haven’t got anything better to watch.

As I’ve watched anime through my own time, I’ve never encountered anything like this… No, it wasn’t bad, nor was it good. But still, totally different. My conception of anime got a bit challenged while watching this anime, and I believe some people feel the same way.
