Noir Mireille Bouquet is a professional assassin, a very good I might add. Mireille lives a relatively normal life on the outside, a very content person with what she has and what she gets. Without remorse or any other emotional bonds she delivers all contracts to the end with great discretion and professionalism, a killer to the bone. One day she receives an e-mail describing that a person sees the need to talk with her about a past shared, a past forgotten, a pilgrimage to the very end. On arrival she meets a young girl Kirika. The enigmatic girl seems to have forgotten all about what she is. Afterwards Mireille and Kirika decide to join forces, and to learn more about a thousand year old organization that holds the world in its embrace, and seemingly has been a big part of their lives even before. Their only working clue in finding out more about Kirika’s shady past and of the organization, works as their codename in their field as assassins, a story from ancient times yielding a heavy burden within it, the myth of two maidens whom govern death; Noir.
Characters in the story are all enigmatic, filled with dilemmas of times past and of minds set on the crimson fluid that fill our veins. Both Mireille and Kirika hold the skills and mental strength to take the lives of others, with hearts of cold stone, without any mental change. A scary, yet feasible picture of the human mind fill the voids of the characters, giving chills to those watching as the unthinkable things are made true, and without even flinching. The really interesting part in it is that even though most characters in the series portray certain coldness within them, they still become human in our eyes. Character development plays a far significant part in the actual produce, and justifiably is one of the greater assets of the story, and gives a nice in-depth feeling to the characters. Personally this struck as a very interesting factor, as changes within the persons comes in a very natural way, not as a sudden change. Kirika’s change to a far more humane person is very good, as the human-killing-machine turns into something that starts to show signs of regret, signs of remorse and a need to express her own deep feelings. Adaptation within the characters proved to be a really successful part of the series, since all characters fill each other and play roles that impact the others straight. The story in Noir isn’t the world’s most innovative, but is one of the better sides of the whole set of stories revolving around similar settings. Yet, the fact that Noir doesn’t prance around with total innovation and new ideas, it still gives out a nice feeling to itself. A dark story unfolding neatly in slow sets up while keeping your mind away from lethargic thoughts, and drifting vision from the screen. With Noir the story isn’t the main thing, it only serves as a way to give the characters room to thrive and to form the complicated character development that surrounds the actual series. Of course, one can not demean the actual meanings and subtle hints scattered in-between the lines within the series. Filled with intriguing thoughts and suggestions about the world surrounding us, it really fills your mind to the edge.
Noir isn’t an equivocal story that tries to create the utmost complex twists and the most horrid storylines; it works around the things proven good within time. Naturally, with the story being more than predictable it does give out a more or less ‘I’ve seen this before’-vibe that is oh-so familiar these days. With a very well made character development, complete with characters that actually work to create a really working contrast both in-between and with the characters. The shades of evil are to be determined by the viewer, as the story criticizes the actual ethics and morals that surround the current society. Noir is a good series, with its strengths and with its weaknesses. I do actually recommend this series, as it is a really good one in the end. From a not-so-cliché time you have to give it credit for its near-complex story and amazing characters, as they once again prove to work totally in its advantage.
